Turning down your room thermostat by just one degree can save between £85 and £90 a year. The ideal temperature is around 18°C.
Keep a free flow of air around your thermostat to make sure it works in your best interests. Make sure it has a free flow of air to sense the temperature correctly. Don’t cover it with furniture or curtains and don’t put electric fires, televisions or lamps too close.
Are any of your radiators covered (even slightly) by your furniture? If you can, try moving the furniture to make sure all of the radiator is exposed. You will be amazed at how much more warmth there is in the room.
This may sound obvious but if you aren’t in, don’t waste money on heating. If you know when the house will be occupied, switch the timer on a little bit earlier, so the house will be nice and toasty when you come home. Don’t turn it off altogether though as in very cold weather this can lead to burst pipes.
Again it may sound obvious but if you have an empty room – don’t waste money heating it. Whilst most student houses won’t have empty rooms – there will be times when one or more of you will be away for the weekend or a holiday. Again, don’t leave a room totally cold as in extreme weather this can lead to burst pipes.
